Qidan 2023 – Dahongpao

Tea – Yancha Wulong
Harvest – Spring 2023
Origin – Xingcun, Wuyishan (Banyan)

The name Dahongpao is often used for Yancha blends of various grade and quality that might include several cultivars. Dahongpao is a more famous name than Yancha and tied to legends and different teas so it is impossible to define it clearly.
If instead of blends we consider cultivar, there is not one “Dahongpao” cultivar but rather a few of them, the Qi Dan and Bei Dou are the names of individual cultivars commonly considered to be propagated from some of the “Dahongpao” famous old bushes that are one of the main tourist attractions of Wuyi mountain scenic park.

This tea is one of those cultivars: a pure not blended Qidan that is well processed and can be appreciated for its character. A cozy tea with a nice charcoal roast and rich but subtle fragrant aromatics that develop more as the steeps go on expressing the cultivar character.

This can be both a tasty tea for any occasion with a deeper flavor profile but also an interesting experience for those curious to try one of the famous Dahongpao cultivars.

Additional information

Name

Qi Dan 奇丹, literally mean "strange red". Da Hong Pao 大红袍 literally means "big red robe". This famous name indicates a group of old trees, a location where they grow and a lot of different yancha blends. Basically is easier to sell tea called a famous name. There is also a legend involving tea from the famous "mother" bushes and the emperor that supposedly explains how the name was chosen.

Brewing Tips

We reccomend brewing this tea in a gaiwan or teapot. As for any Yancha we recommend to keep the very first infusion aside to have at the end of the session at room temperature.
